Let's start re-using recycled thermoplastic composites

Let's start re-using recycled thermoplastic composites

Let’s Start Reusing Recycled Thermoplastic Composites brings together businesses and innovators to explore how recycled thermoplastic composites (TPCs) can help secure your sustainable material needs and future-proof supply chains. Hosted by Brightlands Materials Center, this one-day event is focused on matching companies that enable recycled TPC materials to those who need them.

Our goal is to create a “marketplace “ where the supply and demand sides of recycled TPC materials meet to jointly start exploring and creating (new) circular supply chains based on TPC waste opportunities that exist today. The event will also give an overview of TPC markets and highlight current recycling options, recycled TPC materials, and the long-term potential of circular TPC ecosystems.

The Importance of Thermoplastic Composites

Thermoplastic composites are ideally suited to address the challenges of energy and material transitions. Composites offer exceptional lightweight functionality, enabling them to replace heavier materials like metals without compromising mechanical performance. As a result, they contribute to energy savings and CO2 reduction in applications such as airplanes, trains, and cars.

Moreover, thermoplastic composites are relatively easy to recycle, allowing them to be reused multiple times in similar applications. However, reuse is far from a reality today and the industry still faces challenges, including the need for better supply chains for recycled materials and a robust market for these products.

Changing policies and legislations, like for example the upcoming European legislation on auto recycling, intensify the necessity of finding alternatives to fossil resources. Recycling existing TPCs can play a significant role in the solution. Currently, manufacturing operations that process TPCs generate concrete amounts of waste that can be processed relatively easily into recycled TPC materials for reuse in a variety of markets. Driven by legislation, business sense, and technological innovation these supply chains can then be extended to cope with more complex post-consumer TPC waste streams.
