Hydrogen

Hydrogen

Hydrogen is on the verge of playing a key role in the future of mobility, particularly for heavy-duty vehicles such as trucks and buses. It also holds great promise for stationary applications, such as (emergency) generators and service points along major transport routes. As a clean fuel, hydrogen produces no harmful emissions and offers a powerful way to reduce CO₂ emissions in the transport sector. The ambition is to make green hydrogen from wind and solar energy, enabling Europe to become fully independent of imports from other continents.

RAI Automotive Industry NL’s hydrogen program focuses on accelerating the development and implementation of hydrogen technologies. Our goal is to enable large-scale, zero-emission transport.

Our Focus Areas

  • Hydrogen Combustion Engines
One groundbreaking approach is the direct use of hydrogen as a fuel in combustion engines, aimed at achieving zero-emission propulsion for heavy-duty vehicles and industrial applications. This technology includes various configurations, such as PFI SI, LP-DI SI, HPDI CI, and DF CI.
  • Fuel Cells
We support the development of fuel cells (PEMFC, SOFC) for sustainable vehicle propulsion, including retrofit solutions for existing electric vehicles. We also promote the use of electrolysis to convert electricity into hydrogen for temporary energy storage.
  • Hydrogen Infrastructure
To deploy hydrogen on a large scale in mobility, an efficient network of hydrogen refueling stations and logistics chains is essential. This program focuses on accelerating the rollout of such infrastructure and explores various storage methods, including hydrogen tanks and the promising LOHC technology as an alternative to compressed hydrogen gas.

Why Hydrogen?

Hydrogen is a highly promising sustainable alternative to fossil fuels, especially in sectors where battery-electric transport falls short. This includes long-haul transportation, heavy construction and agricultural machinery, and various industrial applications. By combining innovative technologies with a robust infrastructure, we can significantly accelerate the transition to hydrogen-based mobility.
