Pim Grol, Managing Director of RAI Automotive Industry NL, describes the situation as “a serious problem” and stresses the importance of swift and transparent communication to safeguard production continuity across Europe.
“We contacted ACEA, the European association of car manufacturers, which helped arrange an emergency meeting at the Ministry of Economic Affairs this Wednesday afternoon,” explains Grol.
“The shortage of Nexperia chips is affecting the entire value chain. Automotive manufacturers typically operate with limited stock – between one and five weeks – and switching to alternative suppliers is not a short-term solution. Production lines are full, and testing new components takes months.”
According to Grol, companies primarily want to understand which scenarios the Minister of Economic Affairs will explore.
“There’s a great deal of uncertainty in the sector. We urge the government to provide frequent updates on its discussions with China and on the next steps. Clear communication is essential to restore confidence and stability.”
The interview with Pim Grol was broadcast on “MKB praat mee” on BNR Nieuwsradio and is also available on bnr.nl.
